Within the existing framework of support objectives in the Divorce Act, these advisory guidelines propose a new way to approach the determination of the amount and duration of spousal support, through the application of either a with-child or without-child formula. In addition, like the Child Support Guidelines, these advisory guidelines put forward specific proposals for both ceilings and floors on support payments. These guidelines also look at the impact of the formulas on interim support applications as well as discuss the issues of variation, review, remarriage and second families, and their effects on support under each of the formulas.
