Who is entitled to receive a Westlaw Canada Password?
Any registered full time or part time undergraduate or graduate law school student is entitled to complimentary access and a Westlaw Canada Password/Quick Reference Card. Any full time associate or full tenured faculty member is entitled to complimentary access and a Westlaw Canada Password/Quick Reference Card. Adjunct faculty or part-time faculty are not normally entitled to complimentary access, please make a special request to carswell.lawschool@thomson.com.
How do I receive a password?
Contact your Law School Law Library Reference Staff or your Legal Research and Writing Faculty to obtain a Westlaw Canada password sheet. This sheet will include a pull-off wallet signed password card and complete instructions on how to register your password.
My password doesn't work and stays on the Sign On page?
You must add a research identifier in the Client Id field in order to proceed to WestlawCanada research. This can be up to 35 alphanumberic characters and will identify your research session. You may then use this identifier to automatically update this research session at a later date
How do I register for Westlaw Canada?
Complete instructions on registering your Westlaw Canada password are included on the password sheet that you obtain from your Law Library Reference Staff or Legal Research and Writing Faculty. You have 6 weeks to register the password before it will automatically deactivate. Simply follow the instructions on the password sheet.
How long will my law student Westlaw Canada password remain active?
The student password will remain active until you complete your law school degree.
How can I change my graduation date so that my password access continues?
You must speak with your Law Library Reference Staff and request a graduation date change. The Law Library Reference Staff will be required to forward a formal e-mail to carswell.lawschool@thomson.com confirming this change and providing your new graduation date.
Can I use my existing Westlaw Canada password when I transfer to a new law school?
No. Go to the Law Library in your new law school and request a new password.
How long will my law faculty Westlaw Canada password remain active?
The password will remain active until you move to a new position or retire. Please inform us about changes in your status by e-mailing carswell.lawschool@thomson.com.
If I forget my password, what do I do?
Your Law Library staff will be able to retrieve your password, however, if you encounter any difficulties simply email us at carswell.lawschool@thomson.com.
Is student access restricted to a certain number of hours or searches?
Yes, there is a 60 hour limitation per month, this limitation does not generally cause difficulties. Remember all usage must be directly related to official law school courses or programs and all research must be for educational purposes only as set out in the license agreement.
Also, when searching there is a 400 hit limitation, please consult your Law Library Reference Staff for effective search strategies.
What documentation is available for Westlaw Canada?
When attending a Westlaw Canada training session, you will receive a Quick Reference Guide, or you may request one from the Law Library Reference Staff. Two online support documents are also available for download:

What is Client ID?
This is a mandatory field and you password will not forward you to research until it is added. A Client ID is used to identify your research session. It can be a reference to a particular class assignment, specific research you are working on for a class. You may enter up to 35 alphanumeric characters to identify this research session. Once entered, you will be forwarded to WestlawCanada and you may also update this specific research session using the Research Trail..
