Which sign-on form should I use (Sign-On or My Sign-On)?
You can sign on to WestlaweCARSWELL using either screen.
If you use your 11-character Westlaw password each time, use the Sign-On screen. Enter your Westlaw password in the space provided, enter a client ID and click GO.
If you use a personalized Sign-On select the Sign on using My Sign-On screen.

What is my Client ID?
A client identifier can be any combination of letters and numbers, with a maximum length of 35 characters. It is necessary to enter a Client ID whether you use Sign-On or My Sign-On.
You can use a client identifier to associate a research session with a client, but even if you're not researching for a specific client, you must still enter some value into the Client ID field to sign on.
How do I create a password that’s easier to remember than my Westlaw password?
1. At the My Sign-On page, click Register for My Sign-On.
2. Enter your assigned Westlaw password and a username and password of your choice.
3. Choose a security question and enter your answer in the text box provided. Also enter your e-mail address. If you forget your username and password, we will ask you for your e-mail address and the answer to your security question.
4. Enter your first and last name. When you have completed the form, click Save.
You can now sign on with your personalized username and password, and a Client ID. You can only use this on the My Sign-On screen.
I forgot the user name and password I registered with My Sign-On. What should I do?
On My Sign-On page click on Forgot Username & Password. Fill in Username and Password Request Form and we will send you the information via e-mail. You will be asked for the security question and e-mail address you provided at registration.
How do I change the information I used for My Sign-On?
On My Sign-On page, click on Change Username & Password. Use the Update Username and Password Request Form to modify your registration information.
I forgot my 11-character Westlaw password. How do I get it?
Please contact your firm's Corporate Administrator. Canadian customers may also contact Carswell's Technical Support team at 1-800-387-5164. Toronto may call 416-609-3800.
Should I save my password?
If you save your Westlaw password or your personalized user name and password, it will be automatically entered every time you visit WestlaweCARSWELL. This makes signing on more convenient, but anyone using your computer can sign on WestlaweCARSWELL with your password or your personalized user name and password.
Note: A Client ID is necessary each time you sign on, even if you save your password.
Should I use a secure connection?
The Secure Connection option encrypts your entire research session so information you transmit to WestlaweCARSWELL cannot be observed by a third party. To use this option, your browser must support secure sockets layer (SSL) encryption protocol.

Use your browser options to select the print size desired.
How do I remove the summary page, highlighting, and flags from my printed documents?
On the Print/Download page, Current Destination: Attached Printer, uncheck features not required in the Content area.
What is composed book printing?
This feature emulates the appearance of the printed version of a document. It is available in WestlaweCARSWELL for US caselaw documents, not for Canadian caselaw.
How do I change Print Doc button to Save Doc button?
Under the More dropdown select Options, Print & Download. In Destination select Download and click Save.
How do I e-mail a document?
Under the More dropdown select Options, Print & Download. Under the Destinations dropdown select E-mail. An E-mail doc button will appear at the bottom of your documents. Any time you click buttons to save or print documents you can select E-mail option in Current Destination dropdown.
How do I print an entire act?
Do a legislation template search using the citation of the act you want. From the result list Print All Options dropdown, select All Documents.

When you are creating a WestClip entry click Edit Delivery settings, select Destination Notify at E-mail.
How do I get a complete headnote in WestClip results?
While you cannot select headnote only in WestClip Edit options we suggest you click Edit Delivery Settings, and select Document Format All Term Mode Pages. If you select Document Format First Pages you may not get full headnote.
Why do I get no results when I click Run after setting up a WestClip?
By default WestClip looks for new documents added after the date the WestClip is setup. The first automated search is run the following day.
Why do many WestClip e-mails say “No documents satisfy your query”?
In WestClip Edit Delivery Settings you may have selected Results, Inform me of no results. Uncheck this.
Why do many WestClip results contain documents older than requested start date?
WestClip catches all documents that are added to the system as well as existing documents that are updated.
How do I change the maximum number of documents per result limit?
In WestClip click Edit Delivery Settings Limits. Change Maximum number of documents from default 25 to 100.
How do I setup a WestClip to deliver weekly news from my subject Source?
In subject Source service click on This Week’s News. From Cite List result click on WestClip. Name Clip and leave query as Read.

How do I get the exact phrase I want in my search results?
To prevent common words from being ignored by the system put a # mark in front of the common word, e.g. “examination #of trustee”.
If the common word is immediately preceded or followed by a quotation mark the # is not required, e.g. “of mice #and men”.
How do I change the database result ranking default?
Database defaults are chosen in Options, Search. Default is Database default: ranking may be by age or by publication. Select Terms to switch to ranking based on the occurrence of search terms in your documents.
Can I use Boolean connectors in Template searches?
Yes, you can use Boolean connectors in Template searches. To make this work, in the Template Results Must Contain dropdown, select Any of these terms.
If I can’t find anything with a Custom Search Template or a Terms & Connectors search what should I do?
Use the Natural Language search feature and enter the question or statement you wish to research.
How do I scroll through an entire act?
When you are viewing a part of an act, click the dropdown arrow next to Locate, select Docs in Seq and click GO. This will change Docs button to Docs in Seq. Click Next arrow to scroll down through an entire act. Click the Previous arrow to scroll up to beginning of the act.
How do I display headnotes only in my search results?
When your search results are loaded, click the down arrow next to Locate, select Fields, check all options except Opinion, and click OK.
How do I move from one document to another in the CED search results?
Under Locate select the Docs in Seq (documents in sequence) option.
How do I find cases citing old statutes?
While we do not have the full text of old statutes on our system we do have references to them. You can Find or Search Legislation for the act you require. From Results list select the item you want, maximize the popup Link Viewer, and click the KC Citing Refs tab to see cases citing.
What is the best way to search all the Ontario Labour Relations Board cases on WestlaweCARSWELL?
In Custom Search Template for cases enter O.L.R.B. in citation box.

Click Limit Citing Refs. Options include: by jurisdiction, date, document type.

The information in the KC History link may be in the process of being loaded. Try again in 24 hours.
How do I use KeyCite for legislation?
Click KeyCite, in Legislation Title enter the title of an act or the citation of the act including the year. You can include a section number in the title or in the section box.
Can I KeyCite rules?
Yes, the same way you KeyCite legislation.
What is the difference between KC History and KC Citing Refs?
KC History contains the direct history of the case plus negative considerations. KC Citing Refs contain all cases considering plus secondary sources.
Why is the Authorities tab for cases sometimes inactive?
The Authorities tab for cases is a simpler way to access cases referred to in the full text. Older cases or very new cases will probably not have working Authorities tabs.
How do I do a Locate in a KC Citing Ref list?
This feature is not currently available on WestlaweCARSWELL.
How do I do a citation search of the CED?
The citation format for the CED is CED + subject title + segment number.
An example of Find by citation is CED Absentees 1.
An example of find by citation using the CED custom search template is Absentee s1 or CED Absentee s1.
